Question

"How has the film industry changed over time and what factors have influenced this change? Consider production, distribution and marketing in your response"

The film industry has changed over time by factors such as production, distribution and marketing. Production, there's so many factors with production that has influenced in the film industries change such as budget, the budget has gradually increased. Usually it was $100,000 but not it ranges to $100 Million to $400 Million. The cameras back then were low quality and they were bulky, but now they are small and are the highest quality. The sets back then had to be handmade but now you have CGI and green screens and blue screens, so you don’t need any handmade set works. The animation has changed as well for example snow white and the 7 dwarfs, and there is a increase in CGI for animations. Anime which is also part of the film industry has influenced the change very much as the animations sometimes use CGI or they have very good art styles, for example: Your Name. Typically most of these are high budgeted as well. Which then makes tons of money which thus has a big impact on the film industry. The taking of a lot of scenes was quite costly back then but now you can take tons of shots with various angles. The film industry had the directors usually on set, but now there is tons of various jobs such as vfx team, sfx team etc, there is also more colour now, back then it was in black and white but now colour makes it more realistic.

Marketing also has had a huge impact with the film industry. This includes synergies with other companies (typically big companies like coke), trailers and advertisements in huge and popular areas such as times square or the red carpet, or the super bowl, premiers, marketing on social media, giveaways/merch included in the film to get more people to watch it, posters and billboards press releases, interviews, articles about the film. Historically marketing would take like 70% of the film (on top of the budget) so if the budget was 100 million, the budget for marketing would be 70 million now marketing can exceed the budget of the film they don’t need to rely on the 70% rule for example films like the purge and insidious had production budgets under $5 million but had a marketing budget of over $20 million. Recently bigger films had a huge marketing spend. Endgame spent over $200 million of it's $356 million on advertising. Social media has also taken a huge part in marketing, such as TikTok, YouTube and Instagram.

Distribution also has had a huge part in the film industry, since the new dawn of age with technology. There has been a increase in online sales and memberships with famous streaming services like Hulu, Disney+ and Netflix, this factors in with distribution as they are distributing the films. For a long time DVDs and Cinemas have played a huge part with distribution in the film industry, but during the pandemic this had a huge impact as people had to mainly rely on streaming services as no one could go out and watch the movie in cinemas. As there was a 76% decrease in box office revenue it went from 1.2 Billion in 2019 to 296 Million in 2020, but in 2021 there was a double increase but it was low as there were less people going to the cinema since the pandemic - this had a huge impact within the film industry as the box office usually relied on cinemas making revenue for them.
